Getting started with CtrlLayers
CtrlLayers is a plugin for Adobe InDesign that makes it easy to split a document’s layers out into a new file, and bring translated or updated layers back in — without breaking the original layout.
The Ctrl menu
- Check for updates… — checks for the latest build of CtrlLayers.
- Register… — opens the CLM to license or trial the plugin.
- Help… — brings you to these support pages.
New document from visible layers
Hide the layers you don’t want to include, then choose New document from visible layers from InDesign’s Layers panel menu. A new document is created containing only the layers that were visible — handy for handing off, say, just the text layer to a translator.
Import layer(s) from file
With a document open, choose Import layer(s) from file from the Layers panel menu, then pick the InDesign file and the layer you want to bring in.
If a layer with the same name already exists in the destination document, you’ll be asked how to resolve it: replace the existing layer, merge the two layers into one, or rename the imported layer so both are kept.
Want to drive layer export/import from a script? See the CtrlLayers product page for the Scripting API reference.
